Stepping into Fig & Oak feels like entering a beautifully curated time capsule—one where mid-century design meets modern creativity. Founded by Samantha Romero, the showroom is more than just a space for sourcing rare, well-crafted pieces; it’s a hub for artistry, community, and inspiration. We caught up with Samantha to talk about her journey into sourcing, how heritage shapes her creative eye, and, of course, the skincare staples she swear by.

How did you get into sourcing mid-century pieces & what prompted you to build Fig & Oak?

My journey into sourcing mid-century pieces began with a deep appreciation for the design and craftsmanship of that era. This passion led me to explore various markets, auctions, and estate sales where I could find these timeless treasures.

The idea behind building Fig & Oak stemmed from a desire to create more than just a retail space; I envisioned a lifestyle showroom that would serve as a destination for creativity and community. I wanted to showcase not only beautiful furniture but also to provide a multi-faceted environment where artists, designers, and creatives could come together to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and inspire one another.

By combining my love for design with the goal of fostering creativity, Fig & Oak has become a place where people can appreciate the beauty of well-crafted furniture while also engaging in meaningful interactions with others who share similar passions.

Do you feel that your roots & background have influenced your creative expression, & if so, in what ways?

Absolutely, I believe that my roots and background have significantly influenced my creative expression. Recently, during a trip to my family’s hometown in Mexico, I had the opportunity to visit my great uncle’s antique storefront located in the heart of historic Mérida. This experience was not merely a casual visit; it was a profound moment of connection with my heritage.

It became evident that this appreciation for antiques is not merely a personal interest but something that runs in my family. My great uncle’s passion for preserving history through these artifacts inspires me to explore similar themes in my own creative work.

What does your creative eye look for when sourcing items for the showroom?

When I source items for the showroom, I approach it with a personal touch, as if I were selecting pieces for my own home. I often find myself gravitating towards pieces that embody a timeless appeal and will continue to be appreciated over time.

In terms of aesthetics, I have a strong preference for natural materials such as marble, which offers elegance and durability; metals like copper or wrought iron, which provide a lived-in appeal; leather, which only looks better with age; and wood, which brings warmth and organic beauty to any environment.

Ultimately, my goal is to curate a collection that not only looks beautiful but also feels inviting and authentic. Each piece should contribute to an overall atmosphere that encourages connection and appreciation.

Can you walk us through your day-to-day skincare routine?

Recently, I have been focusing on calming and moisturizing products to adapt to the fluctuating weather in Los Angeles.

I start with a gentle cleanser, followed by a nourishing ceramide barrier serum to maintain my skin’s protective layer. Next, I apply the Destress targeted calming serum for any irritation, followed by the Dew You Hyaluronic Serum for hydration.

To lock in moisture, I use a colloidal oatmeal cream, which soothes inflammation, and I finish with Elta MD’s tinted SPF for sun protection and an even complexion.

What's one facile product you can't live without?

I’m never without my Lip Jelly Tint in Clove. The tint provides a natural flush to my lips while keeping them moisturized throughout the day.

What advice would you give young creatives looking to pursue their craft?

I strongly encourage the development of an action plan that outlines specific, measurable, and attainable goals to provide direction and focus as you progress. Additionally, engaging in structured educational programs can offer significant advantages by equipping you with practical tools and valuable insights. For instance, I participated in a 10-week program led by Jason E.C. Wright at the Burntsienna Research Society, which clarified my business objectives and provided invaluable feedback from fellow creatives.
